The importance of ‘rest days’
If you are training hard, your body will naturally need time to recover. Having planned days off to let your body recuperate so you can push hard the next go around is crucial to make gains in body comp, strength, and athleticism.

In the pursuit of athletic excellence, it’s easy to fall into the trap of pushing ourselves relentlessly, believing that more training equals better performance. However, my journey through high school basketball taught me a valuable lesson: rest and recovery are just as crucial as hard work on the court.
During my high school basketball days, I was pushing my body to its limits. With a schedule packed with 85 league games and three-hour practices every day, it felt like I was constantly in motion. Add to that the intensity of playing two games a week for four months straight, and it’s clear that my body was under immense stress.
While this rigorous training regimen undoubtedly helped me improve my skills and athleticism – I found myself able to jump 4 to 5 inches higher – it also took a toll on my body. I began to notice signs of fatigue, both physically and mentally. It became clear that I needed to incorporate planned rest days into my routine to allow my body the time it needed to recover properly.
Implementing rest days wasn’t about slacking off or taking it easy. Instead, it was a strategic decision to prioritise my long-term health and performance. By giving my body a chance to rest and recuperate, I was able to prevent overuse injuries, reduce fatigue, and maintain my overall well-being.
Rest days weren’t just about physical recovery; they were also essential for mental rejuvenation. Taking a break from the relentless grind of training allowed me to recharge mentally, regain focus, and approach each practice and game with renewed energy and enthusiasm.
Incorporating rest and recovery into my training routine was a game-changer. Not only did it help me avoid burnout and injury, but it also allowed me to perform at my best when it mattered most. Whether you’re a competitive athlete or a fitness enthusiast, remember that rest is not a sign of weakness – it’s an essential component of any successful training program. So, listen to your body, prioritise rest, and watch as your performance reaches new heights.
